ALTOUR Index Reports People Are Traveling More, Opting For Luxury Tourists Are Looking To Travel And Choosing Premium Level At The Right Price

(New York – April 9, 2012) The April ALTOUR INDEX (the luxury travel expert’s bi-monthly survey of hundreds of leisure agents) shows a strong increase in travel overall from last year, and an increased demand for luxury vacations. Customers are jumping on promotions offered by luxury cruise lines, finding better value at the luxury and premium level. With the increased number of travelers agents are finding confusion about Airline policies and fees as the number one concern for their clients.

“People have taken that big step back into traveling,” says Linda Costa, a Los Angeles based ALTOUR agent. The April ALTOUR INDEX reports 55% of customers are traveling more in 2012 than they were at this time last year. Costa attributes this increase to the customer’s renewed “confidence to spend that money on vacations”.

The April INDEX shows a 12% increase in demand for premium vacations over the January INDEX. Las Vegas based ALTOUR agent and branch manager Lynn Minard reflects this increase with her customers saying, “They looked at certain products or brands as out of their reach pricewise. Now these cruise lines have made so many great offers in terms of value that people are willing to bump up to the luxury or premium level.” This increase can also be seen at the luxury vacation level as ALTOUR agents are seeing a 25% increase in demand from 2011. People are willing to spend at the premium or luxury level if they know their dollar is going far, “they are getting a lot more for their money. You see that a lot in the cruise market” says Minard.

Confusion about airline fees and policies was found by the April INDEX to be the main concern of ALTOUR clients. Booking with ALTOUR affords clients “certain benefits that can protect the client” from overpaying on airline fees. ALTOURS’ uncompromising commitment to travel means the customers know when they book with ALTOUR they are getting the “best price, the most flexibility, convenience, and service because you can save them money by getting them their seat assignments without paying the fee on our preferred airlines” says New York based ALTOUR agent Jackie Kos.

We enter into the spring and summer months of 2012 with the encouraging trends that travellers are looking to go farther and spend more, for the right deal.

The use of visual arts as one of a full range of diplomatic tools “to bring people together and foster a greater understanding. The artists will be engaging with underserved youth by creating community-based art projects in cooperation with local arts organizations in China, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, India, Kosovo, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Phillipines, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Venezuela. The program began in October 2011 and will run throughout 2012. ALTOUR has been taking care of the artist’s travel to each location.

With some Kasparovian play, and a little help from ALTOUR, the South Bronx could be home to a future United States Chess Federation champion. That’s the hope for the WHEDCO (Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation) Chess Team, and its 8 players aged 9-13, when they travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota to compete in the United States Chess Federation chess championships April 13-15th.

WHEDCO started working in the South Bronx some 20 years ago to provide affordable, energy efficient housing to the nation’s poorest Congressional District, CD 16, where 38% of all residents and 49% of children live in poverty. They support some 30,000 people annually having built 260 apartments for low-income families in the South Bronx with another 293 apartments in the pipeline. The chess team is an extension of WHEDCO’s youth development program. Led by coach John Godoy and Raphy Sanchez, this is the team’s first year competing in the Chess In The Schools tournaments. The hard work is paying off with an invitation to the prestigious US Chess Federation national tournament. ALTOUR is showing its support for the team by providing them airfare to the championships.

Winning chess championships is of course one goal, but these players are also learning valuable life lessons that are bigger than taking someone’s queen. In the words of Christopher R. an 8th grader, “One thing I have learned about chess is to always think before you move.” That is a philosophy we can stand by at ALTOUR.

The team has launched a Youtube campaign to help spread the word. Click below to hear what the team has to say.

Good luck to the team as they display their skills on the national level. For more information about WHEDCO go to their website http://whedco.org

Air travel has made the world a smaller place, but also a more complicated one. It’s great that we can eat breakfast in New York and be in London in time for tea, but with added access comes added security concerns and the endless miles of red tape that come with it. For frequent international travelers, this was simply a part of the process that couldn’t be avoided: a necessary evil. But new and expanded programs allow for simpler immigration procedures for trusted travelers.

Global Entry is a program that allows frequent, trusted international travelers to bypass standard immigration procedures. By passing a pre-screening process, travelers will be able to enter the country far more quickly through an automated kiosk.

Interested? To sign up for Global Entry, travelers need to file an application with US Customs and Border Protection. The application process includes an interview, background check, and $100 fee. But once you’ve been approved, entry is as simple as a fingerprint-scan and a swipe of your passport.

The program debuted as a program called INPASS during the late 90’s and early 2000’s with a focus on collaboration with similar programs in Canada and Europe. The program required a traveler handprint and was only available out of New York’s JFK airport, though it later expanded to LA, Miami, Atlanta, and Chicago.

The newer Global Entry program eases the customs process at a number of new airports and has far more partner countries. Twenty-two airports in the US and Canada(with US pre-clearance) now use Global Entry including most major hub cities:

Boston-Logan International Airport (BOS)

Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)

Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW)

Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)

Ft. Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL)

George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston (IAH)

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)

Honolulu International Airport (HNL)

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas (LAS)

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

Miami International Airport (MIA)

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

Orlando International Airport (MCO)

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)

San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

San Juan-Luis Múñoz Marin International Airport (SJU)

Toronto Canada Pearson Airport (US pre-clearance) (YYZ)

Orlando-Sanford International Airport (SFB)

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport-SeaTac (SEA)

Vancouver Canada (US pre-clearance) (YVR)

Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD)

Need to get through even faster? Global Entry is integrated with the TSA’s Expedited Screening Pilot program. As of October 4th, 2011 all members of Global Entry are eligible for the program which eases security on US citizens who travel frequently. Participants will be allowed to keep their shoes on, keep laptops in their bags, keep their belts on and other reprieves of typical TSA security procedures. Participation is only available through American and Delta Airlines at the following airports:

Harrison-Jackson Atlanta (Delta)

Dallas/Ft. Worth (American)

Detroit Metro Wayne County Airport (Delta)

LAX (American)

McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas (American and Delta)

Miami International (American)

Minneapolis St. Paul International (Delta)

Twenty years ago I walked into a dealership to buy a new car. A passionate young man and his cloud of cologne must have seen the overwhelmed look on my face instantly and instantly zeroed in on me. He was maybe too passionate, and certainly wore too much cologne, but he helped me put into words what it was I needed. I drove off the lot a happy customer.

To look at that car now is to see a very expensive box with an engine in it, but at the time it was quite a trendy purchase. This year, when it was time to move on from the box’s replacement, I walked in to a very similar situation. The salesman wore a tighter suit and his glasses that were twenty-years out of style twenty years ago but are now experiencing a renaissance. He wore far less cologne, and the rounded features of the ’91 model had given way to the precise angles of the ’12. But beyond being shown a GPS instead of power windows, the overall experience was largely the same. The way I bought a car had not fundamentally changed.

In some respects, the same cannot be said of Leisure Travel.

Sure there are the evolving trends that every industry experiences, but we have also had to deal with a seismic shift in the essential way travel is sold: the rise of the internet. But where some agents regard the “I-word” as inappropriate for polite conversation, for me it has only served to highlight what makes our services so vital. Because, even though to us it’s just business as usual to book a flight to Hawaii or arrange a private tour of Edinburgh, for our clients those aren’t just numbers on a balance sheet. That 3:30 LAX to HON is actually a couple’s first flight as Mr. and Mrs. Newlywed. That tour is the MacDuff family exploring their roots.

The sound of a human voice wishing that couple “congratulations” in one breath and reminding them to climb Mauna Loa in the next, all while negotiating with an airline’s very finicky upgrade policy is something the internet could never provide. That is why I’ve never been happier to be a travel agent. It has become something of a shock for our customers to be treated like the human beings they are: a shock I am more than happy to give every time. Our clients are, now more than ever, seeking that same personal touch we offered in 1991.

It is a bit of a cliché to note that “the more things change, the more they stay the same,” but it wouldn’t be a cliché if it wasn’t true. Sure we may suggest different destinations and encounter different breeds of travellers. I know that I have seen enormous swells in adventure travel in the last ten years especially. Sticking with our Hawaii example, the islands seem to be on a five-year cycle of waxing and waning in popularity. Can I recommend Egypt as a destination in good conscience right this moment? Most likely not, but when we’re reading the twenty-fifth anniversary newsletter who can say? The client profiles will also continue to evolve. For example, I’ve planned more itineraries for intergenerational travelers in the past five years than in the previous fifteen.

So while the single greatest change of our industry over the past twenty years is undoubtedly the rise of internet booking services, all it has changed for ALTOUR is to make our customers happier with our level of service. We will continue to expertly adapt to the shifting trends of destination and new traveler profiles, but ultimately we provide something that sounds better in person than it does in binary: “Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Newlywed!”

When we decided to re-do the ALTOUR website, we wanted it to be world-class. That meant we had to create it from scratch.

Over a series of months we brainstormed on what exactly we wanted the site to be. We knew we weren’t a e-sales site: we pride ourselves on talking with each of our customers and providing real personal service, not relying on point and click and do-it-yourself. So our site needed to explain the who, what, and why of ALTOUR. But to do so in a unique, engaging, and beautiful way would be a challenge.

That’s where our web design experts really stepped up. The geniuses of Gin Lane Media, a creative agency here in Manhattan, did a simply fantastic job. After looking at our old site, and our way of doing business, they managed to create something that truly sets us apart from the competition: visually and otherwise. The guiding principle of our new design was to be intuitive to new customers while balancing form and function. A site with beautiful imagery and no information would be just as useless as a wall of text describing our services. We think they struck the balance just perfectly.

Thanks to their design, it’s never been easier to explore the varied travel and travel services ALTOUR provides. Novel features include relevant ALTOUR Solutions cut-sheets included right on their respective pages that the customer to dive deeper than every before. Our intuitive cross-sells show just how well we can manage the entire travel experience. And the pages themselves feature dynamic slide shows and all the information you need.

But information alone isn’t enough: we needed to stand out. ALTOUR is proud to sponsor environmental group Goodplanet and their founder Yann Arthus Bertrand. Bertrand has built awareness of environmental issues across the globe with aerial photography of some of nature’s most stirring sites. We thought it was only fitting that we use some of that photography, notably on our homepage slideshow, to make our site something that will keep you coming back.

Love the new site? Hate it? Let us know what you think!

Every other month, ALTOUR sends a survey out to hundreds of its leisure agents to get a bead on the industry. We want to know the where people are headed, how often, and what their chief concerns are. This knowledge helps us plan ahead so we can provide a better service. Below are some of our latest observations along with quotes from some of ALTOUR’s finest.

Leisure travel is off to a good start in 2012, with travelers going abroad at a far greater rate than they were only three months ago. This according to the January ALTOUR Index: the luxury travel expert’s bi-monthly survey of hundreds of their leisure agents. Overall levels of travel have increased, but tourists post-recession continue to look for the best deals, leading to a spike in “all-inclusive” land destinations. Additionally traveler’s concerns about political instability have dropped significantly, while personal security concerns remain constant.

In the November ALTOUR Index, respondents indicated that 30% of travelers were traveling more than average, but in January ALTOUR agents indicated that a full 51% were traveling at a higher than average rate. This is an encouraging start to the New Year, and travel agents are both excited and hopeful by the bump. Cincinnati based ALTOUR agent Roy Benecchi has noticed clients bundling corporate and leisure travel more than before, while also being more willing to spend a little more for the expert travel advice of ALTOUR: “For the first time in a few years, I have seen companies take their employees and spouses on trips…I think travelers’ value our expertise and are more focused on having a great trip than saving a few dollars by booking through an unknown source.”

2011 was a year of political instability worldwide, from the Arab Spring to occupy movements worldwide, but the early days of 2012 have seen travelers grow used to uncertainty. While at the end of last year, “political instability” tracked as the number one concern of travelers, it fell 14% in the latest survey. In fact, political instability has been overtaken by “personal safety” as travelers’ number one apprehension. These concerns have not affected business however. Instead clients look to ALTOUR experts to provide alternatives, and provide additional research before traveling, says LA based ALTOUR agent Bahar Schmidt, “Mexico is not being booked at all, instead they feel it is safer to travel to Hawaii. As well as my clients who want to visit Asia, will have me do research on the safety of the country they are visiting.”

In this regard travelers seem to be traveling smarter, not less. This can also be reflected in all-inclusive travel numbers seeing a significant bump. 31% of ALTOUR agents called demand for all-inclusive resorts high: a 10% increase over last year’s figures. Again, this can be attributed to traveling smarter according to veteran Philadelphia-based ALTOUR agent Bob Jones. “People like “all- inclusives” now more than ever. They like knowing exactly what a trip will cost and not be surprised by any extras.”

As the world continues to change, travelers, armed with cutting-edge technology and the latest information about travel trends, have adapted to the shift, and trends for 2012 look very strong.

Spend the next day exploring the countryside via bicycle or follow one of the many hiking trails up to a series of spectacular viewpoints. After your hike, head to Vik village and take a look at two of Norway’s oldest medieval churches, each dating back to the 12th century. Later that day, take a ferry even deeper into Norway’s wilderness to the end of Finnafjord: traditional accommodation, and complete relaxation, awaits you with no roads, traffic or television.

You’ve never known freedom like this before. Take advantage of the natural wonders that surround you. Go fishing, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, or even swimming in the pristine fjord or take a hike for spectacular views.

Day 7

Bergen and then Home
Time to make your way back to civilization, down the fjords on a series of ships past the beautiful Western archipelago towards Bergen, one of Europe’s largest and oldest port cities. When you arrive, take a car from the harbor to the Hotel Havnekontoret: a 4-star hotel within walking distance of the famous fish market and the funicular. After your full day in Norway’s port city, take the train back to Oslo to depart this northern treasure. Nowray’s abundant natural beauty and rich cultural heritage have kept people coming back for generations. After a week like this, it’s easy to see why.

As a global company that sends people across the planet on a daily basis, ALTOUR understands that it is important to look after that planet. That’s why ALTOUR has formed an alliance with Yann Arthus-Bertrand and his organization GoodPlanet in their mission

The partnership became inevitable after looking at GoodPlanet’s extensive résumé. The French philanthropists have always gone above and beyond to not only educate, with youth programs and their comprehensive website GoodPlanet.info, but to take real steps to save the environment.

Notable amongst their projects is 7 billion Others. The program, initially launched as 6 billion Others in 2003, is a video collage that speaks to the universality of the human experience and the planet we all share. It features testimonials on such topics as love, death, sorrow and happiness from men and women from all over the world.

They also have taken major steps to offset and reduce carbon emissions through projects like Action Carbone, which enables institutions, companies and individuals to calculate, reduce and offset their greenhouse gas emissions by changing their own impact and by funding renewable energies, energy efficiency or reforestation projects.

Education is one of the core values of GoodPlanet, whose mission statement is, “To Bring Ecology into Peoples’ Hearts and Conscience.” Indeed the company’s reach is one of their strong suits. Their dynamic website is frequently updated with pressing environmental issues and they have more than 27,000 likes on Facebook, 9,000 subscribers to their weekly magazine, and 4,000 subscribers to their daily newsletter. But there is always room for improvement.

Many of those numbers are limited since much of GoodPlanet’s correspondence is in French. That’s where ALTOUR comes in. In the spirit of internationalism and reaching as many people with their important message as possible, ALTOUR is proud to sponsor the French-to-English translation of the GoodPlanet’s daily newsletter. The newsletter will be distributed electronically, starting December 2011, to the English-speaking world, raising awareness and inspiring action on both sides of the Atlantic.
